IPL & EYE-LIGHT
At Leichhardt Eyecare, we’ve introduced a revolutionary new treatment for Dry Eye, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and EYE-LIGHT system. IPL and Eye-Light treatment is a gentle, non-invasive treatment that stimulates and unblocks the Meibomian Glands that produce oils that keep your eyes lubricated. The light energy from the IPL reduces inflammation and acts as a warm compress to liquefy the secretions obstructing the tear producing meibomian glands. This treatment can provide long- lasting relief for Dry Eye sufferers. Each session takes just 20 – 30 minutes.
DO YOU HAVE DRY EYES?
- Irritation
- Itchiness
- Wateriness
- Burning
- Redness
- Mucus
- Foreign body sensation or discomfort body sensation
- Occasional blurred vision

WHAT CAUSES DRY EYE?
The Meibomian Glands are located inside your eyelids, these glands produce tears that keep your eyes healthy. Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) is thought to cause the majority of Dry Eye disease. MGD is a blockage of the oil glands around the eyes. These oils are an important part of the tears. They form the top layer of the tears which stops the watery component from evaporating. If the oil glands are chronically blocked, they start to shorten and lose their function i.e. become atrophic (death of the glands).
CONTRIBUTING FACTORS
Things that may contribute to Dry Eye include:
- Air pollution or weather conditions
- Artificial lighting from things such as smart phones and computers
- Air-conditioning and fans
- Ageing
- Certain medications
- Computer Use
- Hormonal changes
- Wearing contact lenses

THE TREATMENT: Two medical technologies will be used in synergy with each other to optimize the result.
- Intense Pulse Therapy: This is a polychromatic light which, using thermal pulses, stimulates the Meibomian glands to resume their normal activities. Applied to the periorbital areas and cheekbone, it stimulates the contraction of the glands, reduce inflammation and liquefies the secretions obstructing the tear producing meibomian glands.
- Eye-Light Modulation: is a unique technology of photobiomodulation (PBM) used for many years in various fields of medicine (dermatology, dentistry, etc). The emission of a light at certain wavelengths triggers an endogenous heating of the eyelids. This treatment facilitates the flow from Meibomian Glands of the oil component of the tear film, stabilising the lipid layer of tear.
